Jazz History Month

April is both Jazz History and Jazz Appreciation month, and the Jazz Journalist Association is giving one of its coveted National Jazz Hero Award to local investor and philanthropist Don Chisholm.  Mr. Chisholm helped keep Jazz clubs like the Bird of Paradise (now closed) open for years and provided transportation and lodging for many jazz legends when they came to play in Ann Arbor.

The award will be presented to Mr. Chisholm at a ceremony during the performance of “All About the Trio – the Music of George Shearing” by pianist Ellen Rowe at the Kerrytown Concert House.

The Concert House, a Kerrytown landmark, was built before 1860 is celebrating 30 years as a performance venue and museum space featuring Classical, Jazz, Cabaret, and Avant Garde music and art.

Many people know that Detroit is famous for the music of Motown – but not many know about Michigan’s place in the history of Jazz.
